The River Stour, which is one of the first navigable rivers in England - its locks were destroyed in Napoleonic times (but now many have been restored) - is particularly pretty from Sudbury through to Flatford Mill, this is where England's greatest landscape painter John Constable painted the vast majority of his paintings of his 'beloved Suffolk'.
If you would like to find out more about this beautiful river, including helpful information on navigation, please visit www.riverstourtrust.co.uk
Alice & Tinky canoeing on The Stour ![]() I have 2 superb, aluminum, 4 seater, 15 foot Canadian canoes, that I can sometimes be persuaded to lend out (for a small consideration) for lovely day's paddling down this beautiful and virtually hidden river - you can paddle through all of Constable locations including 'The Haywain' ! But I have to warn you that this is summer only option and my time is a bit taken up right now with my little daughter and a littler newborn daughter.

We see otters and herons, kingfishers, badgers, swans, a dazzling array of damsel and dragonfly's but usually no people, the river moves slowly behind the beautiful water mills and ancient villages where we stop off for refreshments at a riverside pub.
Alice & Tinks at Nayland.
The river at its closest is 6 minutes drive from The Grove Cottages and a trip all the way to the sea would take 2 days with a 20 minute drive back to the cottages at the end of the first day.
