The River Stour was Englands first navigable river, grain was taken through a series of locks all the way from Sudbury to the sea.
John Constable, the most famous of english landscape artists, was born on the Stour at Flatford Mill just a short drive from the cottages here in South Suffolk. Constable painted 'The Haywain' at the mill where he lived and many of his paintings depict the barges being pulled by horse down the river.
The locks were mostly destroyed during the Napoleonic wars to stop Frenchie from making a sneak attack up the Stour and stealing our pigs (and women).
I have a couple of lovely canoes which I might be persauded to lend my guests at The Grove cottages, to explore this beautiful river.
Please check out the 'Canoeing' webpage for lots of pictures and more details.
