Long Melford for antiques; check the Antique's Fares timetable or AA signs, because the one there and at Lavenham is well worth visiting for bargains.
Bury St Edmunds is a lovely `Grand Market Town' with many beautiful streets and buildings, visit the market (Saturday) have a coffee at one of the many coffee houses and don't miss 'The Nutshell' Pub, England's official smallest pub. There is a very good auction at Bury which is a real bargain hunters paradise, it is always one a Saturday, so check the newspaper to see if it is one while you are here.
Colchester (England's Oldest Town) has a very good Castle / Museum, very good for children of all ages (you can dress them up as Romans or Saxons and chain them to the wall). And some interesting shops in a picturesque setting.
All the little villages around are very picturesque - Kersey - Chelsworth - Bildeston - Long Melford - Lavenham - Monks Eleigh, etc. just explore.
Kersey Lavenham
Lavenham is a wonderfully preserved medieval village. Visit Timbers Antique Gallery. The Bookshop at the bottom of shilling street. The famous Guildhall with its history of Lavenham, the wonderful Little Hall next door and have a meal at the extremely good `Great House' or a drink and a sandwich at The Angel. These are in the Village Square set back from the High Street at the top of the hill.
Flatford Mill is easy to get to, straight through Hadleigh until you reach it. Visit Constable's famous sources of inspiration and take a walk around the pretty countryside and villages there.
Hadleigh
Once a Royal Viking Town this important medieval 'Market Towns wealth was based on the wool trade.
There are over 250 buildings listed for historical Architectural Importance.
There is an interesting river walk around the back of the village and a great little coffee house / bar with a private terrace in the high street called Crabtrees.
Village Fetes and Open Garden weekends
are well worth checking out especially Bildeston, Hadleigh, Lavenham, Rougham and Chelsworth, all of which are quite famous now.
